Born in Russia on May 7, 1840, Tchaikovsky is best known for his ballets and symphonies. He wrote some of the most popular music in the current classical repertoire, including popular ballets like Swan Lake, his violin concerto, First Piano Concerto, several symphonies, and many other works. Although he enjoyed many popular successes, he was never emotionally secure, and his life was punctuated by personal crises and periods of depression.
The Valse-scherzo in C for violin and orchestra (or violin and piano) was written in 1877and may even have originally been intended as part of the larger work. The colorful Valse-scherzo showcases the composer's deft orchestration skills as well as the violinist's technical artistry.
